Special Interest Groups (SIGs) aim to provide specialised information about a certain topic or theme, or promote development and best practice within a sector. They are voluntary groups, set-up on the understanding that they operate for the benefit of an identified interest group. SIGs may be ephemeral in nature; they can be set up by a voluntary group as a need arises, and disbanded if the topic becomes irrelevant or has matured.

The SIGs have an invaluable role to play in providing real business and educational benefits to members. In particular, SIGs:

  • Offer support to the AGI through specialist activities/meetings on specific areas of GI theory, practice, applications etc.  These help to extend the breadth of the AGI's coverage and understanding of the GI industry
  • Provide an opportunity for members to network and focus on specific topics, issues, applications and to participate in the work of the AGI
  • Try to encourage active participation from members (and others) through SIG activities such as seminars, visits or during focused sessions at centrally organised AGI events.
  • Seek to represent the AGI in the best way possible through a broad range of topic coverage and publicity, advertising of the AGI whenever it is possible
  • Contribute to AGI Foresight reports, AGI responses to government consultations and/or AGI position statements

SIGs are supported by Council through a SIG Coordinator who keeps abreast of all the SIGs providing a link between Council and SIG. Each SIG is assigned a Council Champion who has a more in-depth understanding of the SIG and its activities so that any issues that either the SIG or Council is facing can be fully explored.

If you would like to set up your own SIG, register an interest in or join one of these Groups please use the member area or contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.for further information.
