Discussion

The Environmental Special Interest Group (ENVSIG) is an established group of over 400 members within the AGI. This is a very active SIG, organising meetings and visits for its members, keeping members informed through its web pages, and assisting AGI at the annual conference etc.

The ENVSIG's mission is, to facilitate the application of Geographic Information Systems to natural environment issues and related information, through the following objectives :-

Provision of advice on the potential of GIS in the implementation of existing policies.
Liaise with other environmental groups, nationally and internationally.
Increase awareness of GIS applications in the natural environment and its relationship with the built environment.
Facilitate access to environmental information, both analogue and digital.
Act and advise any existing and future environmental agency on the need, content, cost and quality of environmental data.

To help us meet these objectives there is a committee which meets quarterly to discuss and organise future activities of the SIG. We are looking for new members and committee members, so if you would like to join the Environmental SIG then go to the 'join' tab. If you are interested in becoming a committee member please contact the SIG chairman, Jonathan Marshall or any other committee member.

The 2010 ENVSIG annual conference is rapidly approaching. Entitled 'Environmental GI: Which routes will it take next', the event will be held on March 23rd 2010. More details can be found at: http://www.agi.org.uk/pooled/articles/BF_EVENTART/view.asp?Q=BF_EVENTART_317117

The Site Visit programme is open to all AGI members and aims to visit at least three "environmental" organisations per year throughout Great Britain.

Site visits we have done in the past include the following organisations:-

2012 Olympics Site
British Antarctic Survey
Coal Authority
Defence Evaluation and Research Agency
Forestry Commission
Laser-Scan
National Remote Sensing Centre
Ordnance Survey
Scottish Natural Heritage
The Bodlian Library
and there have been many more...

If you know of an interesting site that you feel warrants a visit, please get in touch.
