About Groups

The Groups section provides a forum for AGI members to discuss topics of special interest. To join these groups, you need to be an AGI member.

Current groups include:

Regional Groups

Regional Groups have existed for some time in the AGI and are all run by volunteers. With the increasing significance of Devolved Government these AGI groups are vital in understanding and representing particular interests of the geographic information community in their areas of operation.

Special Interest Groups

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) have existed from the time the AGI was established. The SIGs aim to provide information and promote development in their sectors. They are, and always have been, voluntary groups, set-up by one or more individuals on the understanding that they operate for the benefit of an identified interest group. There are around ten SIGs currently operating.

Action Working Groups

The Action Working Groups (AWGs) act as working parties with a finite and determined lifespan, tasked to deliver an agreed set of objectives.  These objectives can be project or sector specific.  The Council decides on the areas/activities to form AWGs, and their work is coordinated by the Executive Group, with administrative support from the AGI Team. Typical examples are the AGI GeoCommunity Conference AWG, the INSPIRE AWG and the Membership AWG.

AGI Standards Committee

The British Standards Committee for Geographic Information (GI) is there to equip the UK with a set of standards for better exploitation and sharing of geographic information. The committee is an external committee of the British Standards Institution (BSI). It is supported financially by AGI, which covers the cost of the Secretariat which handles formal UK positions on British, European and International Standards.

AGI Council

AGI Council members are elected for a three-year term, with a third of the Council positions available for election each year.  All Council members are elected by the entire AGI membership, except for the regional representatives of each of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who are elected only by those members whose contact address is in that Region.

AGI Executive Group

The Executive Group is a sub-group of AGI Council, plus the AGI Director and the AGI Deputy Director.  Its membership consists of the AGI Chair, AGI Senior Vice Chair, AGI Director, AGI Deputy Director and up to four additional members of Council each taking responsibility for one key area of AGI work.
