Influencing Policy

For over 20 years the AGI has represented the views of its members - in effect the GI industry as a whole - to government and other decision makers and opinion formers on broad policy issues, specific consultations and the detail of relevant legislation.

This is in keeping with the AGI mission to “maximise the use of geographic information…”

Responses to public consultation and statements on policy usually occur several times per annum and involve input from members as well as governance by the elected AGI Council. In fulfilling this responsibility, the AGI is careful not to promote a particular company, product or service in a way which could harm the interests of other members who compete with these offerings. 

The AGI also strives to represent, as far as possible, the interests of all its members and not just those of one group of members.  However, because of its very diverse membership, the AGI is not always able to represent the views of every member in, for example, its formal response to a consultation exercise.

AGI has often held positions of importance with regard to public policy. Most recently that has included membership of the GI Panel and the UK Location Council.
