Benefits of AGI Membership

Operating on a not-for-profit basis, AGI is the impartial and highly respected voice of the UK's GI industry, existing to represent the views of its members by influencing policy and maximising the use of geographic information.  Whatever your field, if you use, analyse, develop or supply GIS and GI data, you will benefit from becoming a member of the AGI.

Influencing

Do you have an issue or concern that you want to bring to the attention of key decision makers within the Geographic Information (GI) industry and government?  Membership of the AGI will provide you with a channel of communication to ensure your voice is heard.

The AGI influences government policy through its representation on the Geographic Information Panel.  Set up by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), the GI Panel provides government with high-level advice on GI issues of national importance.

As a member of the AGI you'll have the opportunity to offer your views on important topics via participation in member consultations, allowing us to effectively lobby Government on your behalf. The AGI also directly lobbies government ministers, departments, agencies and other bodies on behalf of our membership.

Membership provides you the opportunity to start new or join existing AGI facilitated special interest groups.  These offer a unique forum for networking with others who have a common interest or aim, and will allow you direct influence within your sector of the industry.

If you live or work in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, influencing regional decision makers will be important to you. Get involved in the work of our well established regional groups, all of which are active in developing and improving regional GI strategies and hosting their own events about issues of local concern.

We hope you'll also take the opportunity to suggest an event on a relevant topic.  Working along side our Events Manager, you could organise and host a meeting or seminar on a topic that matters to you and other members.

Constitutionally, our members hold the right to stand for a seat on AGI Council, and to vote for council election candidates.  By doing so, you'll know that you're directly influencing both AGI and industry policy.

Informing

As a member of the AGI, you'll have access to the latest and most relevant news and information from the UK's GI industry and policy makers.  Not only that, we'll provide you with the perfect forum for spreading your own information out to an audience of like minded professionals.

The AGI Website is designed with our members in mind.  Those who get the most out of their membership do so in part by contributing to it.  You'll receive a log-in and password which allows you access to member-only privileged content, and is also your key to adding content to the site.

You'll be able to participate in the online member discussion board, publish articles relevant to other GI users, and post your CV online.  If you join as a corporate or sponsor member, you can also increase the profile of your organisation by adding press releases, job vacancies, and event information.

We'll also keep you informed via regular electronic newsletters which highlight important industry and AGI news, and member-contributed information. We can even send out a dedicated e-mail to the entire AGI membership on your behalf (by prior arrangement and for a small fee).

If you want to keep up to date with industry developments, standards and best practice, our specialist events throughout the UK will be of interest, with significantly reduced rates for members.  If you join as a corporate or sponsor member, you'll also be able to take advantage of exhibitor and sponsor opportunities available.

AGI hosts the UK's premier GI conference and exhibition.  Here you'll be able to expand and share your knowledge of the latest technologies, standards, and developments. It's a great way of making sure you're fully informed of everything that's going on in the industry and provides countless networking opportunities.  You might even decide to submit a conference paper.  And of course, as a member your conference pass and exhibition space is available at the reduced member rate.

Acting

Are you looking for the opportunity to build you career, develop your business potential, or meet industry standards?  As a member, we'll provide you with the right tools to do so but getting involved will make all the difference!

Our specialist, regional and annual events will provide you with the perfect platform for networking with colleagues, counterparts, suppliers and potential clients.  All you need to do is register and attend!

By attending specialist seminars, you'll ensure that you're following best practice and adhering to industry standards, both of which will assist with your business development.  Keeping up to speed with industry developments and being party to an expert exchange of knowledge could also result in significant cost savings and benefits

Membership offers you the opportunity to promote yourself and enhance your career.  Add your CV to our website; attend events; get involved with a special interest or regional group; stand for AGI Council - all these things will get you noticed within the industry and will increase your personal experience.

As a Corporate or Sponsor member you'll greatly increase the recognition of your organisation or brand via web contribution, exhibition, sponsorship, and speaking opportunities, and by supporting and assisting the AGI in fulfilling its mission.

If you've undertaken a particularly successful GI related project you'll want to enter to receive one of the AGI's annual industry Awards.  The awards are just one of the ways the AGI promotes and supports the use of best practice.

As a member you'll receive a number of discounts and special offers on a range of services, dependent upon the level of membership you choose to take out.  These are continually reviewed and we encourage members to make suggestions as to what these should be.
