Getmapping Wins bid to Supply Scottish Government with Aerial Photography

Hartley Wintney, UK, May 17th 2013 - Getmapping has won a bid to supply Scottish Government with matched ‘True Colour’ (TC) and ‘Colour Infra-Red’ (CIR) orthorectified digital aerial imagery covering the complete land area of Scotland. This includes all Scottish islands, coastal structures and 10km across the border with England. Image resolution will be 25cm GSD (Ground Sampled Distance) per pixel. The contract runs for four years to 2017 and includes existing imagery as well as updates so that all imagery is within 3 years old from 2016 onwards.

Getmapping will provide high quality orthorectified aerial imagery and product support services for use across the Scottish public sector. The data will be supplied in a number of ways to ensure it can be applied to a wide range of business applications. This includes direct supply for onsite use, in GIS compatible file formats and as both a Web Map Service (WMS) and as a Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) compliant with the INSPIRE directive’s view service standards. Users will be able to order as a complete dataset, by individual local authority boundary or specific area.

Scotland is notoriously difficult to survey from the air for a number of reasons, the main one being the variable weather. High latitudes also mean a limited flying season due to less than optimal sun angles. In the early spring and late autumn the sun angle reduces the amount of available survey time to less than 90 minutes per day. Getmapping brings over a decade of Scotland – wide survey experience to the contract to ensure maximum capture is achieved during the weather windows available every season.

“We have had a commitment to aerial data acquisition in Scotland since 2003 and we were the first commercial company to achieve full country coverage including the Shetlands, Orkneys, St Kilda and other islands in 2011,” said Dave Horner, Managing Director of Getmapping. “From day one, eligible Scottish public sector organisations will have access to our complete True Colour aerial archive, much of which has been captured in the last three years. Under this contract the Scottish public sector will continue to benefit from the comprehensive update programme, technical support and our market leading hosted services,” explained Horner.

1Spatial Launches 1Edit, Powerful Spatial Data Editing Solution

Innovative Touch Screen and Desktop Compatible For Data Capture & Edit

Cambridge, UK, 14th May 2013 - 1Spatial, global specialists in spatial big data management, is today launching 1Edit at the Geospatial World Forum. A revolutionary, touch screen compatible solution, 1Edit offers fast and intuitive data-editing in the field or office.

Trialled by Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi), 1Edit incorporates an innovative touch screen for capture and editing of real-world data, making it a breakthrough for data collection in the field via touch screen, stylus and survey devices.  It can also be used in an office environment with mouse and keyboard. 1Edit’s ‘in the field’ capabilities will be a particular benefit to spatial data providers and industries such as utilities, transport, environment and government.

Lorraine McNerney, Spatial Data and Infrastructure Manager, Ordnance Survey Ireland said: “Ordnance Survey Ireland has been trialling 1Edit as a tool for maintenance of our PRIME2 product database. PRIME2 is the OSi real-world feature database that ensures Ireland has accurate and up-to-date spatial datasets supporting improved government service delivery and economic development in Ireland. The facility for users to interact with 1Edit using a portable device touch screen with a stylus or as a desktop with a mouse, and the integration it provides with our existing survey equipment means that our surveyors out in the field and staff who are office based can utilise the same innovative tool for optimal efficiency. This means that we will be able to provide more accurate and up-to-date data to our customers more frequently.”

1Edit provides fast and accurate topological editing to keep data connected. It allows change-only saving of data and supports rich real-world hierarchical data models, as well as intelligent management of inter-feature references. 1Edit is currently available on Windows 8 with other operating systems to follow.

Marcus Hanke, CEO, 1Spatial said: “We are delighted to launch 1Edit, which offers a powerful, fast and accurate tool to effectively manage real-world data. 1Edit maximises data output, because the touch screen capability means that whether organisations are using 1Edit on location or in the office, they will be able to use the same tool to edit information quickly and easily, saving them time and money on data capture. Organisations can also use aerial imagery or survey devices to ensure the quality and accuracy of the data they create and manage.”

He continued, “We have used our extensive knowledge and experience of working with the world’s largest, spatial big data sets to build and develop our products to truly meet the needs of organisations around the world. 1Edit is an innovative approach and further complements our product offerings.”

1Spatial will be hosting a series of live webinars offering attendees the chance to be amongst the first to see 1Edit in action. Places are limited so register for your free place at www.1spatial.com/1editlaunch

Cadcorp Accepted by UK Government for the Provision of GIS as a G-Cloud Service

Stevenage, 13 May 2013 – British GIS and web mapping software developer Cadcorp, has won a place on the approved list of suppliers of Software as a Service (SaaS)  for Cadcorp’s submitted services, as part of the government’s G-Cloud iii framework.

The G-Cloud Programme is a cross government initiative with the aim of introducing cloud ICT services into government departments, local authorities and the wider public sector. Acceptance into the CloudStore catalogue qualifies Cadcorp as a supplier of Software as a Service (SaaS) technology.  The catalogue is intended to make the process of public sector procurement quicker, easier, cheaper, and more transparent.

The endorsement is for Cadcorp’s off-the-shelf web mapping application, Web Map Layers. It can be used to provide location intelligence in many areas of government business, including central and local government, emergency services, transport, health and education.

Mike O’Neil, CEO of Cadcorp, said the award is a significant recognition of Cadcorp’s ability to respond to changes in the geospatial market:

“We recognised that there were a number of organisations that wanted to purchase web mapping as a service on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis.  We responded by offering Web Map Layers based on SaaS technology. The inclusion of Web Map Layers in CloudStore can only make it easier for us to meet that demand.”

London Borough of Harrow Innov8 to Save

London, 10th May 2013 – London Borough of Harrow have generated direct, cashable savings by developing their own software to facilitate the removal of an expensive product previously supplied by a third party company.

Developed in only three weeks at a cost of little more than £2,100, the new system will see them recognise savings in excess of £15,000 over a five year period.

Known as the ‘Harrow Address Lookup’ (HAL), it is a web based system enabling staff to access and query the council’s local address dataset and view search results on a map.  In addition to removing revenue expenditure, HAL also was designed to create a web services package that could be moulded to the council’s requirements and extended as development plans dictated.

Part of this extension was focused on increased integration with other council departments, so built into it was the ability for property cross references such as Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rates to be assigned against a property by its users.

Once validated and approved, these cross references can be imported into the council’s gazetteer management system with the click of a button, all done in compliance with nationally recognised standards.

Speaking of the project, LLPG Custodian at London Borough of Harrow, Luke Studden, said, “The aim of the HAL was to create cashable savings year-on-year by removing revenue expenditure of £3,500 per annum for a third party software solution offering similar functionality. This goal was achieved, but by embracing the principles of the council’s ‘innov8’ scheme, multiple unforeseen benefits were to be had.”

“Credit for this Award has to go to the whole of the Web and GIS teams as it has been their hard work and dedication that has seen this project become such a success.  It is because of their efforts that this council will continue to make significant savings long into the future.”
