Plymouth City Wins Street Naming Award

The UK' City of Plymouth has received a prestigious national award for its street naming and property numbering. The 2010 NLPG Exemplar Naming Award was presented at a one-day conference ‘Everything Happens Somewhere’ held recently in Sheffield, England.

Streets named after nurses killed when a bomb hit the Plymouth City Hospital Maternity Ward in 1941.Plymouth City Council takes its street naming and numbering responsibility very seriously. It is a chance to engage with the local community and provides tangible recognition of a local feature or personality.

“Through liaison with local residents and other interested parties we were able to use the development of a high profile Brownfield site to celebrate and honour heroes and heroines of the two World Wars.  As the years pass, memories fade and the number of survivors or relatives of those lost dwindle.  To be able to provide tribute at this time was important to all of us involved in the naming process. The names chosen provide reference to the site’s former use, its residents and the price they paid during a time of conflict. It is hoped that the chosen name will prompt reflection and provide a fitting tribute for future generations” commented Jane Hirons, Senior Property and Terrier Officer, Plymouth City Council.

The street names submitted by Plymouth City Council included references to the former RAF Mount Batten; originally a seaplane station and home to flying boats during WWI and remembrance of lives lost at the City Hospital Maternity Ward on 20 March 1941.

The National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) is the authoritative, national address list that provides unique identification of land and property and conforms to BS 7666 (2006). Local authorities in England and Wales have a statutory responsibility for street naming and property numbering. Authorities update the NLPG on a continual basis enabling daily updates to be available to users including Police and Fire Services and potentially commercial users such as insurance and home delivery companies. A recent report has concluded that putting the NLPG at the heart of Council service delivery can save between £15 and £24m per annum.
