Cockerhoop Fell Run Raises Money for Cockermouth Flood Defences

24th November 2011 - A band of fell runners marked the second anniversary of the West Cumbrian floods by completing a run around the skyline of the River Cocker on Saturday 19th November in 13.5 hours.  Organised by Graham Morgan of Spatial Consultants Ltd, a Cockermouth based firm, the event has raised just over £1,000 for the Cockermouth flood defences, and donations are still coming in.

Donations can be made:

- Online: http://www.justgiving.com/cockerhoop-fell-run-flood-defences

- SMS: Text HOOP55 and amount to 70070

- Pledge: email gmorgan@spatialconsultants.com to pledge a donation

Considering that the area suffered the worst rainfall on record on the same date 2 years before, the weather gods were very kind to the team, they even had sunshine on Brandreth (the source of the River Cocker).  The 35 mile run started and finished in the heart of Cockermouth, where the River Cocker joins the River Derwent.  It followed a route over the Lake District fells that make up the skyline above the river, climbing over 13,000 ft and reaching over 20 summits along the way, including Melbreak, Red Pike, High Crag, Brandreth, Dale Head, Robinson, Grassmoor and Ladyside Pike. The route is described on the Spatial Consultants website at:

Graham had a great support team of runners, 'caterers' and drivers who made the whole event very enjoyable indeed.  This may have been the first time that this route has been followed but, as it turned out to be a wonderful line, the team would be surprised if it was the last.

About the Cockermouth Floods

The town of Cockermouth was ravaged by flood waters on the night of the 19th November 2009 in a disaster that caught the world's attention.  Two years later the town is still recovering and needs to build flood defences.  The town is working with the Environment Agency to develop defences to protect the town and needs to raise money to build them.  Information provided online by the Cockermouth Flood Action Group at http://www.cockermouthfloodactiongroup.org.uk.
