Successful conclusion of ESDIN project delivers data quality follow-up work for 1Spatial
Cambridge, UK, 27th April 2011. 1Spatial is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the European Spatial Data Infrastructure with a Best Practice Network (ESDIN) project and the company’s new engagement with EuroGeographics to assist with the data quality assurance of their EuroRegionalMap (ERM) data.
The ESDIN project, funded under the eContentplus programme and coordinated by EuroGeographics, was a collaborative programme to provide best practice guidance for harmonising geographic digital content from across Europe and assist countries in meeting their INSPIRE obligations.
During the project 1Spatial was primarily engaged in four work packages developing procedures and guidelines for data quality evaluation, edge matching and generalisation. The development of pilot service environments enabled the demonstration of the benefits that automation can bring to organisations’ data management strategies when deployed in the context of well-defined process models.
Amongst the many public deliverables available from the ESDIN project (www.esdin.eu) three that are of particular relevance to the concepts and pilots developed for data quality, edge matching and generalisation are:
? D8.4 - provides guidelines for a standards-based approach to defining quality models, measures, metadata and presents an effective solution for an automatic quality evaluation service
? D9.1 - recommends a harmonised specification of edge matching procedures and organisational workflow for National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs)
? D11.3 – assesses the pilot developments and deployment of geospatial and web-based technology to automate data quality checks, perform edge matching and generalisation via shared services.
The commitment and motivation of the 20 partners involved has meant that the original objectives of the project have been exceeded and additional accomplishments made. A path has been prepared for on-going development and delivery of processes, specifications and interoperable service prototypes in addition to the elaboration of the European Location Framework (ELF).
The data quality and edge matching recommendations, demonstrated with 1Spatial’s Radius Studio solution, were well received by the partners involved in the project. As a result, EuroGeographics has engaged 1Spatial to exploit the outcomes of ESDIN and use a Radius Studio-based, automatic data quality evaluation solution to assist in the cost and time effective delivery of high quality ERM data to Eurostat in January 2012.
Dr Antti Jakobsson, Programme Manager for EuroGeographics said:
“We selected 1Spatial to continue the quality work in order to establish ESDIN results in our EuroRegionalMap production line. Our aim is to use best practices for the quality evaluation and to ensure that our products meet high standards. Our customers want reliable and consistent products so that they may use them for analysing environment change, risk analysis and other geospatial analysis. Therefore we think quality is our number one priority.”
Dr Matt Beare, Principal Consultant at 1Spatial added:
“It is a great testament to the ESDIN consortium that as we mark the end of a successful, pan-European collaboration the legacy of the project is already being carried forward under a variety of new guises. Working with the ESDIN partners, exchanging knowledge and developing ideas and solutions together has been a most rewarding experience for 1Spatial. We are looking forward to building on the foundations we have established and putting into production some of the achievements of ESDIN.”
