Size of UK Location Market estimated to be almost £1¼bn

Following one of the most comprehensive studies of its type undertaken to date, ConsultingWhere the international consulting and market analysis organisation, today announced they estimate the size of the UK Location Market to be in excess of £1bn for the first time.

Their estimate for location related software, professional services, data and hardware in 2012 is £1.23bn. Despite on-going challenging economic conditions the UK B2C and B2B markets for location related solutions has experienced growth of between 2 and 3% in “like for like” sales since the last full survey in 2009.

Although the team also predict the market to continue to grow at a modest 1 to 2% in real terms over the next 3 years, they  have identified that key industry sectors will experience growth of between 8% and 13% in the same period.

ConsultingWhere Director Andrew Coote says:

“The picture of the UK market coming into 2012 was mixed with growth concentrated in the B2C mapping and a small number of industry sectors. Those suppliers reliant on the public sector saw little growth or in some cases saw turnover reduce since our last full survey in 2009. Although the future looks challenging for some within the supplier community, there are real opportunities for those that develop a deep understanding of the needs of sectors in which location-centric solutions are still under-developed such as insurance, retail and media.”

The market assessment, ‘The UK Location Market Survey 2012’ has expanded considerably in scope from 2009 to include:
  • A review covering over 320 separate supplier organisations
  • A breakdown of revenue by industry sector
  • A comprehensive review of the technology and business drivers within and facing the sector
  • A detailed assessments of status and growth opportunities of all market sectors including input from domain experts
  • The inclusion of marine and geomatics sector organisations
  • An estimate of the number of people working in the market
  • Stock market trends for major publicly listed companies
