Symology adopts 1Spatial’s Radius Studio for use in the Scottish Community Apparatus Data Vault

Cambridge, UK, 15th November 2011. 1Spatial is delighted to announce that Symology Ltd, a leading developer and supplier of integrated asset management solutions, has purchased Radius Studio for use in a new project with the purpose of improving access to and sharing of information on underground assets.

The Scottish Community Apparatus Data Vault (VAULT) is a major new development, which will make underground apparatus information accessible to registered users of Road Authorities and Statutory Undertakers via the Scottish Road Works Register (SRWR).  The aim of the service is to allow timely access to information about all underground assets from a single centralised location, both to improve work planning and more importantly to ensure the safety of the operatives working on the roads.

As the current SRWR service provider, Symology worked with the Scottish Community on a number of successful regional trial asset integration projects which made use of Radius Studio technology. The company has now adopted 1Spatial’s Radius Studio platform to automate the transformation and conflation of incoming data from multiple organisations contributing to the VAULT.

Mike Bartlett, Managing Director at Symology says “In the trials, Radius Studio was being used for only a small part of the transformation process. Over time, as we have been trained in the full capability of the product we have extended its use further, making efficiency savings by removing unnecessary standalone scripts. The flexibility and functionality of Radius Studio gives us great confidence that it will form a great platform for the long-term delivery of the service.”

Mark Plews, General Manager, UK and European Sales at 1Spatial added “We are delighted that Symology recognise the extensive capabilities of Radius Studio and the opportunity to leverage their investment in the technology beyond its initial remit.

1Spatial and University of Nottingham collaborate on OpenStreetMap data quality project

Cambridge, UK, 21st September 2011. 1Spatial is delighted to announce the company’s participation in a new, collaborative project OpenStreetMap Great Britain (OSM-GB), in partnership with the Centre for Geospatial Science at the University of Nottingham, to create a quality enhanced and topologically structured version of OpenStreetMap covering Great Britain.

OSM is a free and open worldwide map created by a community of over 450,000 volunteer contributors which has been described as the Wikipedia of maps. It is rich in detail and used in a wide range of applications on mobile devices and the web for navigation, games, search and humanitarian relief.

The OSM-GB is a 15-month research project, which has two main objectives:

  • Using 1Spatial’s Radius Studio platform and data quality expertise, the research will explore rules-based processing firstly to identify, flag and then fix (where possible) any errors or inconsistencies in the OSM data and then to project the data on the British National Grid to create a repurposed dataset for the UK which will be available as a free OGC web service, a tile service or for download
  • By improving the overall utility of OSM data for Great Britain, OSM-GB seeks to give increased confidence to the user community and attract users in the public sector and other domains who have not yet evaluated OSM data against their traditional sources. The project will test whether these “professional” users can be encouraged to become contributors to OSM extending the coverage and detail of OSM

An early example of the output from OSM-GB and further details of the project can be found at http://www.osmgb.org.uk

Become a certified Radius Studio Practitioner with 1Spatial

Cambridge, UK, 26th August 2011. 1Spatial is delighted to announce the launch of the Radius Studio Accreditation Programme to support customers in getting the most out of our flagship technology platform.

The programme recognises that end users can be as important as the technology they are using. It provides a way for people to develop specialist knowledge and increase their understanding around the powerful, rules-based processing technology.

With a hands-on focus, certifications are based on practical implementations of the Radius Studio technology, which can be in a variety of scenarios. There are two levels of accreditation; Practitioner and Professional, where, to be a Professional, you must already hold the Practitioner level certification.

In addition to the immediate benefits of being able to maximise your organisation’s investment in Radius Studio by exploiting the full potential of the technology, in the longer term you are contributing to both your own personal development and the skillsets available within your organisation. Practitioners and Professionals alike will have access to a help and advice from the Programme Coordinator via accreditation@1spatial.com  and obtaining each of the certifications is free.

Lee Wells, Senior Land and Property Information Officer at Staffordshire County Council and one of the first certified Radius Studio Practitioners, said:

“I’m really pleased to have been recognised for this award. For most people they are just doing their day job which involves constantly learning and evolving the way they work and this programme recognises the skills and knowledge passed on and supported by 1Spatial. Both Staffordshire County Council and myself have gained valuable resources, which have seen a real return in both quality of data and efficiency savings and we are looking to build on this with further projects in the future.”
