Blom UK captures innovation with further applications of unique aerial imaging tools

Blom UK, a leading company in the geodigital capture and aerial imaging sector, has announced further benefits through the company’s unique cost-effective and time-saving suite of tools packaged in the recently-launched BlomMETROTM technology.

The complexities of data capture, especially whilst captured in a high speed, high altitude environment, provides many challenges. Combined with an economic austerity, Blom UK launched the unique package combined within the BlomMETRO suite, to provide an even better set of customer-centric solutions within the aerial imaging and digital mapping sectors, as Blom UK’s LiDAR Manager Hamish Grierson comments:

“Blom has a long history of owning and operating a range of digital cameras and sensors across Europe. Traditionally, these instruments would be run independently, even if multiple formats were required.”

“The demand for higher quality resources, and the need for improved data capture efficiency, has seen the long-established techniques of aerial surveying put under the microscope recently.”

“Some of the immediate benefits of using the dual capture data systems within BlomMETRO technology include reduced costs, reduced carbon footprint (as our flight time is lowered), faster delivery of data to our clients, as well as data of the same age within both photographic and LiDAR capture, due to our introduction of further innovations.”

The Blom UK offering via BlomMETRO also encapsulates use of 4cm Ground Sample Distance (gsd) aerial photography – rather than the typical 20cm levels within the industry, meaning that Blom UK provides ultra-clear vertical viewing. There is also the facility to deliver one metre post-spacing LiDAR – essential for the very best city-wide coverage. 3D models can also now be provided.

The BlomMETRO suite can be enhanced with bespoke data, such as flood modelling and solar potential mapping, offering a level of commercial flexibility previously unseen in the industry.

False colour and near-infrared can be included – this is of particular interest for environmental studies, giving dual capture via the BlomMETRO package wide-ranging appeal and practicality.

The introduction of such innovation within the BlomMETRO package makes it a truly innovative, industry-leading suite of solutions, as Grierson concludes:

“This creates a high specification suite of aerial imagery data products, creating a unique and up-to-date dataset of urban areas – which we believe is unrivalled in the industry at this point in time.”

Blom will be demonstrating the advantages and benefits of BlomMETRO at the upcoming Mapping Showcase 2011 event, as part of this year’s London Mapping Festival. To find out more please join us there.

Blom transforms aerial imaging services with new dual capture tools

Blom, one of Europe’s leading geodigital capture companies, is announcing the transformation of its aerial surveying services at this year’s ELMF 2011 exhibition in Salzburg; the introduction of dual capture technology to simultaneously capture digital photography and topographical LiDAR data.

The introduction of this time-saving, cost-effective equipment looks set to bring about widescale and radical changes to the nature of data capture in the digital imaging sector, as Blom UK’s LiDAR Manager Hamish Grierson comments:

“Blom has a long history of owning and operating a range of digital cameras and sensors across Europe. Traditionally, these instruments would be run independently.”

“However, the demand for higher quality resources, and the need for improved data capture efficiency, has seen the long-established techniques of aerial surveying put under the microscope – for this reason, Blom UK have introduced simultaneous data capture, with their Vexcel large-format digital camera and ALTM LiDAR system.”

Once all data capture has been completed and processed, the LiDAR and aerial imagery is added onto a data archive as part of a new set of tools called BlomMETRO™, creating a unique, high specification and current dataset of urban areas.

Introducing BlomSTREET™: a high-resolution street-level imagery service for the professional market

BlomSTREET™ is a collection of georeferenced, high-resolution, 360 degree panoramic images that are photographed on street-level. The camera equipment used is mounted on the roof of a specially equipped car taking an image every five meters on average in the collection process.

The technology comes from the Dutch company Cyclomedia. Blom signed a partnership agreement with Cyclomedia in summer 2011 for the exclusive use of this technology in Scandinavia. During the summer, the first cities where captured and the Municipality of Falkenberg is the first in Sweden to use the BlomSTREET™ technology. The technology is proven and has been used by professionals, such as municipalities, for over 15 years in Holland.

BlomSTREET™, powered by Cyclomedia, is delivered as a cloud service where the customer receives images and functionality delivered via a web service. No storage of data is necessary for the client. This also allows functions and data to be continually updated without the customer requiring new installations.

A key feature of BlomSTREET™ is that compared to other free street services on the web, such as Google Street View™, users have the ability to take measurements directly from the imagery. Metadata is also an included feature, meaning it’s possible to know exactly what time and day the images were captured. Customers are also entitled to use and download images within their own operations.
