GIS Cloud Featured at Eye on Earth Summit

Esri Platform Supports Collaborative Environmental Problem Solving

Redlands, California—December 06, 2011—At the Eye on Earth Summit Esri will describe how cloud GIS is positioned to create an international geospatial platform for sharing environmental data and designing solutions. Also former US president Bill Clinton, Esri president Jack Dangermond, and European Environment Agency (EEA) director Jacquelyn McGlade will join other renowned speakers to present the value of accessible data for international collaboration and decision making.

The Eye on Earth network will be featured at the summit in Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates, on December 12–15, 2011. Esri, Microsoft, and EEA have pooled their expertise to retool EEA's Eye on Earth with a cloud-based geospatial content management system modeled after ArcGIS Online. The Eye on Earth network now provides tools for creating maps, accessing thousands of readily available maps and datasets, and managing geospatial content. People can use the network to share content with the public and among groups or to use privately. Governments, research organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and the public can use the network to work together to understand problems, develop policy, design plans, and take action. Furthermore, the cloud-configured network provides the foundation for other regions to create similar environmental platforms.

"People truly care about their environment, but they can be at a loss as to how to participate in policy and make a difference," said Dangermond. "By putting environmental and social information into the hands of many people, the Eye on Earth network will become a catalyst for conversation. We think this is going to bring people to their feet by empowering them to understand problems and be part of the solutions."

Esri's ArcGIS Online technology, coupled with Windows Azure and Microsoft SQL Azure, allows EEA to host and maintain the platform, create database and business process management systems, and integrate security constraints. GIS web apps help user groups create and share map-based services, perform analysis, and publish geospatial products.

In the summit's pavilion, experts will demonstrate the Eye on Earth network's capabilities such as citizen engagement and collaborative environmental problem solving.

'Smart Meter Cities' will thrive in the Midlands and Trans-Pennine Corridor

 15/11/2011

  • Nottingham is the UK’s #1 city for smart meters
  • No North-South divide, London ranks only #20 in the UK
  • Glasgow and Edinburgh households may need to change their behaviour of electricity consumption
  • Low income consumers will get a boost from smart meters, reducing electricity usage and bills
  • Utility companies need to think local not regional in electricity smart meter roll-out
  • Geographical information systems are critical in minimising roll-out costs of smart meters and reducing household electricity bills

Aylesbury, 15th November 2011 – Esri UK, the leading provider of geographic information systems (GIS), today reveals that Nottingham is the UK’s #1 ‘Smart Meter City’ - based on the potential for smart meters to benefit consumers by reducing electricity consumption and household bills. The study conducted in partnership with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) identified two key zones of the UK as smart meter hotspots - the Midlands Hub and the Trans-Pennine Corridor - due to their concentration of potential Smart Meter Cities.

The Esri UK/Cebr study aims to help the public understand the benefit of smart meters (which show consumers how much and where electricity is being consumed in real-time) in reducing household electricity bills, and to show where utility companies should invest time and resources in the smart meter roll-out. The result is the Esri UK Smart Meter Energy Consumer Choice Indicator (SMECC) which has ranked the top 20 UK cities likely to benefit most from smart meters.

The Esri UK SMECC Indicator has identified the primary zone for smart meter investment as the Midlands Hub, comprising Nottingham (#1), Wolverhampton (#2), Birmingham (#4), Leicester (#6), Coventry (#9) and Stoke-on-Trent (#11). The second zone that the Esri UK SMECC Indicator revealed was the Trans-Pennine Corridor which spans from Liverpool (#5) to Hull (#8) and includes Manchester (#7), Bradford (#13), Leeds (#14) and Sheffield (#18).

Additional key findings:

  • For 90% of the Top 20 cities, price sensitivity rather than energy intensity is the determining driver for saving money through smart metering. This is because the impact of rising electricity prices is higher on households, due to monthly electricity bills being bigger relative to disposable incomes in the majority of those cities. Therefore, smart meters will play a major role in reducing consumption and bills.

Esri Incorporates Ordnance Survey OpenData into World Topographic Map

United Kingdom Is Latest Nation to Contribute Data to Esri's Community Maps Program

Redlands, California—October 27, 2011 - The Ordnance Survey's (OS) small- and midscale OS OpenData products have been included in Esri's World Topographic Map, the crowdsourced map at the foundation of Esri's Community Maps program. The map service can be accessed from the basemap gallery in ArcGIS Online.

The OS OpenData products incorporated into the World Topographic Map include information on roads, rivers, woodlands, administrative regions, built-up areas, and buildings representing a high level of detail. The added detail from OS OpenData significantly enhances the value and utility of geographic information for anyone working on mapping projects with British geography within the World Topographic Map.

Typically, when geospatial data holders release free data products, the information is only available in vector format that requires setup and processing before it can be used. By processing that raw information and integrating it into a map service in ArcGIS Online, Esri makes the data more accessible and convenient to include in applications and maps.

"I am very pleased Esri has incorporated OS OpenData into its World Topographic Map," commented Peter ter Haar, products director of Ordnance Survey. "OS OpenData allows users to download a wide range of mapping and geographic information for free reuse, and its inclusion will provide new opportunities for people to develop innovative applications and services."

The United Kingdom is the latest European country to contribute data to the World Topographic Map, joining the governments of the Czech Republic, Spain, and the Netherlands.

For more information on how to contribute data to the World Topographic Map, visit esri.com/communitymaps.

Esri UK Launches LocalView Fusion in the Cloud

Enhanced Citizen Engagement at Lower Cost

Aylesbury; October 21st 2011Esri UK, the country’s leading provider of Geographic

Information Systems (GIS), has launched the UK’s first GIS solution for local authorities, LocalView Fusion, in the cloud.   Local authorities can now benefit from engaging citizens with interactive maps and location-driven information, at both reduced cost and complexity.

One of the major features of LocalView Fusion in the cloud is the introduction of pre-designed GeoTemplates for common tasks, which can be easily implemented by non-GIS specialists.  With no software to buy, install or maintain, GeoTemplates offer users a scalable way to develop and embed easy-to-use, customised, citizen-centric maps.   From intuitive maps and pop-up information windows to Geo RSS feeds that enable citizens to subscribe to alerts about events in their area, GIS web publishing has never been easier or more accessible.

GeoTemplates also enable local authorities to offer a more consultative approach to local government by encouraging feedback and information from citizens, staff and partner organisations, in just a few clicks.   For example, views can be gathered on planning proposals or citizens can be invited to report the location of problem issues such as graffiti or pot-holes, through survey or questionnaire templates.  These can be easily created using a range of standard question formats and respondents can specify locations on a map by text, from pre-logged lists or uploaded photographs and images.

“Cloud-based LocalView Fusion is an incredibly powerful GIS tool, enabling local authorities to better align the provision of services with demand, maximise resources and support the delivery of ‘better for less’,” commented Stephen Leece, General Manager for Esri UK’s Local and Central Government practice.  “GeoTemplates in particular offer local authorities a cost-effective approach to enhanced citizen engagement, making the sharing of maps and location-driven information easier than ever before.”
