Getmapping works with Harvey Maps

Hartley Wintney, UK, November 27th 2012 - Getmapping aerial photography is being used to help create and update Harvey Maps, which are enthusiastically endorsed by mountaineers, walkers, cyclists and orienteers. Getmapping also provides a WMS feed of its latest UK aerial photography to enable Harvey Maps to detect change so that its maps can be kept up to date.

Getmapping captures aerial photography with a range of high resolution large format digital cameras. The cameras capture frames with a large degree of vertical overlap so that images can be orthorectified to correct the distortions due to topographic relief, or camera orientation during flight. Image resolution varies according to requirements. Most urban imagery is captured with each pixel equivalent to 12.5cm ground sampled distance (GSD). Rural and mountain areas are generally captured at 25cm GSD.

Harvey Maps has always prided itself on the fact that its walking and other recreational maps are made using sound map making techniques and then checked by a team of experienced field surveyors who are themselves enthusiastic walkers. As a result Harvey Maps are renowned for their accuracy, clarity and practicality with many available in tough waterproof polyethylene. Many of these maps are now available in digital format, for example on an SD card for use with the Satmap Active 10 GPS receiver.

“We get stereo imagery from Getmapping which is then fed in to our photogrammetric process,” said Robin Harvey, co-founder of Harvey Maps.

Getmapping Street Layer Integration wins Exemplar Award

Hartley Wintney, UK, November 19th 2012 - Getmapping’s integration of its street level imagery (Getmapping Street Layer) has won Bath and North East Somerset Council the GeoPlace Exemplar Award for Services. The locationally accurate 360° high resolution street level images are seamlessly integrated into the Council’s mapping applications which are hosted by Getmapping.

Street Layer imagery is available to all staff within the Council via Getmapping’s District Online Web GIS. Functionality includes full NLPG integration with search made on an address or UPRN(unique property reference number), with multiple viewing angles displayed in up to three windows. The imagery can be viewed with OS MasterMap or other PSMA data in a split screen arrangement. It is also possible to take point and line measurements at centimetre accuracy with full CSV data export. All the data, is hosted remotely so there is no hardware overhead. The total solution helps to make staff more productive, reduces the number of site visits and car journeys and therefore cuts carbon emissions in line with Council targets. Staff in the contact centre now have an immediate view of a property when people call, all that is required is the caller’s address. This makes it easy to identify, street lights, access or highway problems.

“We are delighted to have won this award,” said Martin Laker, GIS Manager for Bath & North East Somerset Council. “Getmapping Street Layer imagery and its integration into Getmapping’s Web GIS has made it possible to reduce our staff car usage. Planning, Property and Highways are all reporting that they are reducing the number of site visits. A 3% reduction is sufficient to pay for the service and we have achieved that with ease. Elsewhere our CRM team are reporting improved response times from being able to find and visualise the property at the outset of a customer call. Being able to validate what is being reported is now much easier. All the imagery is date stamped which is a great help in determining precisely when events occur,” continued Laker.

“Getmapping Street Layer imagery represents an affordable and superior alternative to other street imagery available on the web. The savings being made will be sufficient to refresh the imagery every two years,” said Chris Mewse, GIS,Business Development Manager at Getmapping. “By integrating the imagery and tools directly into our web applications users can look at aerial photography, a full range of Ordnance Survey maps and then click straight into detailed geometrically accurate street level imagery to understand specific detail. The imagery also provides a very accurate historical record of roads and buildings within the authority much of which falls within the City of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre,” continued Mewse.

Getmapping Opens Kenya Office

Intergeo, UK, October 9th 2012 - Aerial survey specialist Getmapping, in partnership with Survplans and Geomatica, has opened a new office in Nairobi, Kenya, to increase its presence in East Africa. The office will support the activities of GAP (Geospatial Aerial Partnership) - a joint venture between South African companies Geosense (part of the Getmapping Group) and Geomatica and will operate in partnership with Survplans, a leading provider of ground survey services across Kenya and East Africa.

The Nairobi office will support a full range of data capture, processing and analytical services. As well as large scale LiDAR and aerial photography, the partnership specialises in corridor mapping for power and civil engineering projects, together with asset survey services for mining. It is planned to augment these survey and post processing activities with data hosting and web based GIS software soon.

GAP operates a number of large format survey cameras, including the A3 system from Visionmap which provides rapid capture and processing capabilities. The  A3 has already been used on a range of projects in Africa including a high resolution (6.25cm) survey of the entire City of Cape Town. GAP provides a wide range of aerial survey services across Southern Africa from its offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

“By establishing an office in Nairobi, we are making a long term commitment to operate in the region rather than just undertaking occasional projects” said Matt Murphy, Managing Director of Geosense. “GAP has established a reputation for providing high quality survey services across Southern Africa over the last few years, and we now want to provide these services to the East African market as well.”

“This new partnership will provide clients in the region with a complete service for both ground and aerial surveys” said Ken Ndede, Managing Director of Survplans. “East Africa is growing rapidly and we aim to support this development by providing a strong, technically robust, local presence in the region.”

Getmapping Maps Dorset’s Olympic Infrastructure

Hartley Wintney, UK, September 24th 2012 - Getmapping completed a 2012 aerial survey of Dorset in preparation for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Specially commissioned by Dorset County Council the high resolution data provides up to date information for all the recently built Olympic venues and associated infrastructure. The data was supplied at 12cm pixel resolution together with a 1m digital terrain model (both DTM and DSM) derived directly from the aerial imagery.

Dorset County Council's GIS team was responsible for managing the spatial data requirements for the Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Local Resilience Forum, which is in turn responsible for the local ‘Recovery Plan’, a process of rebuilding, restoring and rehabilitating the community following an emergency or disaster.  This was particularly relevant during this summer as Dorset hosted the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events in Weymouth and Portland. The Games also prompted a series of requests for up-to-date mapping and spatial data. The need for-up-to date data had become especially urgent as the area has benefitted from extensive improvements including changes to the highways network, as well as the extensive new infrastructure built to accommodate the Olympic family.

The new data was provided along with 50 or more other Olympic data sets via the council's own web-based mapping system OlympicExplorer.
