Getmapping Hosts Maps for Aberystwyth University

Hartley Wintney, UK, March 13, 2012 - Getmapping is providing a high performance WMS map data feed to the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences (IGES) at Aberystwyth University. The data includes OS Mapping, Getmapping high resolution aerial photography, colour infrared imagery, and elevation data. This comprehensive suite of data delivered via the Internet from Getmapping’s Data Centre is being used by undergraduates on a daily basis.

The data can be accessed via professional GIS software but also through Getmapping’s own web based GIS application which can also pull data from IGES’ extensive Digital Map Library. As well as the supporting students the library recently played host to Welsh abstract artist Mary Lloyd-Jones who is using Getmapping imagery of forestry, lead mining and Cardiff Airport to provide inspiration for new work involving schools which will feature in a S4/C Welsh Television documentary to be screened in March 2012.

“This is a fantastic resource for our undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academics who can use these data in combination with other GIS, remote sensing and field survey data held in our recently established Digital Map Library” said Professor Richard Lucas from IGES. “The data are simple to access through the GIS software packages, which the students are using on a daily basis and, of course, the great thing is we do not have to manage it in any way. An additional bonus is the ability to access the data remotely using Getmapping’s own web based GIS application which means students are not restricted to working within the Department.”

“Our WMS data hosting services go from strength to strength.

AeroGRID Adds Aerial Imagery of Canada

Paris, France, 21 February 2012 – AeroGRID has signed a data agreement with First Base Solutions, Canada’s leading provider of aerial photography and orthophoto mapping. The agreement will enable AeroGRID to resell 120,000km2 of central Canada plus all major cities with the data supplied via WMS.

AeroGRID currently hosts over 1.5 million square kilometres, of continuous aerial survey coverage over 10 countries in Western Europe as well as data from South Africa and the USA on its WMS web server. AeroGRID can also provide additional access to 2m km² of data from 10 other European nations.

WMS is the standard protocol for streaming georeferenced map imagery over the Internet to web based applications, GIS and CAD software. WMS feeds only load the imagery that a user needs to see rather than a whole dataset, it is a very convenient and efficient way for our clients to access our growing library of high resolution high accuracy imagery.

“AeroGRID now has an established and growing network of partners extending to every continent,” said Miles Taylor, General Manager.

Getmapping Supplies High Resolution Aerial Photography of Enfield

Hartley Wintney, UK, November 29, 2011 - Getmapping has supplied Enfield Council with 2011 aerial photography of the whole of this busy London borough. The photography was captured using a Vexcel digital camera at very high resolution from a height of 2,500 feet which requires special permission from Air Traffic Control. The imagery delivers  a ground sampled distance (GSD) of 5cm per image pixel. This provides exceptional ground detail enabling close scrutiny of multiple assets such as street furniture, road markings, trees and buildings.

The imagery is available to everyone across the authority’s intranet via a web based GIS together with Ordnance Survey maps, older aerial surveys and selected GIS layers according to job description. The data is also used together with oblique imagery from a previous survey by the planning department in the unique Multivision software environment which enables obliques taken from four directions to be viewed in conjunction with a central vertical image.

“The quality of the latest 5cm vertical imagery is excellent and detail such as street furniture can be clearly seen,” said Dave Pullinger, GIS Mapping Officer. “The imagery is used daily throughout the Council via its intranet. We are currently using it within our GIS software to accurately map all allotment plots on the 37 sites in Enfield. The imagery is also used extensively to resolve planning and enforcement issues.”

“The latest data was captured in June 2011 at 5cm resolution simply because that is what we had had before,” said Lee Merrison, GIS Team Leader at Enfield Council. “Nobody wanted to revert to 10cm data, which although still very good provides less detail of what’s on the ground. The imagery acts as a terrific base map to which everyone has access. It has become a vital tool in so many areas of Council activity that we have now instituted a two year update cycle complemented by oblique images which will be re-captured during 2012.”

AeroGRID becomes a licensed agent for FÖMI Hungary

Paris, France. November 28, 2011 – AeroGRID has signed a data distribution  license with FÖMI, the Hungarian national mapping agency to become an agent for FÖMI’s national aerial imagery for the whole of Hungary. AeroGRID now boasts the most extensive library of aerial imagery of Europe.

In 2011 AeroGRID has worked hard to expand its data portfolio in order to deliver on the promise of being a one-stop-shop for aerial imagery. In this year alone AeroGRID has added Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Hungary.

"This agreement will result in the more widespread use of Hungarian orthophotos throughout Europe," said Bence Toronyi, FÖMI Director General.

“By working closely with national mapping agencies AeroGRID has built up extensive and continuous coverage of Western Europe and Scandinavia, and is now extending its reach into Central Europe,” said General Manager, Miles Taylor. “We feel sure that now we have the Czech Republic and Hungary on board, we will soon be seeing further agreements for this dynamic area of Europe,” continued Taylor.

About AeroGRID

AeroGRID was created to provide a one-stop-shop for aerial imagery. Today aerial photography is available for over 50 countries and off-the-shelf high resolution satellite data for many others. By marshalling partner resources, which include survey aircraft and high-resolution digital cameras AeroGRID is able to extend coverage and engage in a regular revision programme that provides extensive and up to date aerial imagery for the market. Much of the AeroGRID image library is now available via WMS with WFS metadata, the standard protocols for streaming geo-referenced data over the Internet to web based applications, GIS and CAD software.
