Leica Geosystems Ltd inspires local students to be a Surveyor for the day to compete to win a Class of Your Own® curriculum

(Milton Keynes, UK, 6 August 2012) Leica Geosystems Ltd is pleased to announce Shenley Brook End School, Milton Keynes as winners of its Class of Your Own (COYO) competition winning a Design, Engineer and Construct Curriculum worth £6900.

Last year Leica Geosystems joined forces with COYO to raise the profile of architecture, engineering and professional construction careers in UK schools. With this in mind Leica Geosystems Ltd who are based in Milton Keynes, with support from COYO, invited local school students to take part in a competition to find out what it’s like to be a Surveyor for the day to win the curriculum which encourages young learners to recognise the professional Built Environment.

The competition was aimed at year 7 and 8 students who had to answer questions relating to sustainability and land use in their local community. They had to present their findings in a powerpoint, word or poster format. The submissions were judged on content, creativity and research by a panel including David Price, Managing Director of Leica Geosystems; Rory Stanbridge, Secretary General of The Survey Association and Alison Watson, Founder of Class of Your Own.

The winning entry was from Hannah Gawkowska from Shenley Brook End School, Milton Keynes. Hannah’s entry stood out for her detailed research as well as her creative approach, where she used a cartoon surveyor throughout her presentation to explain supporting information. Additionally the judges would like to make a special mention to Matthew Bardsley, also from Shenley Brook End School, for his not so well known key fact about three out of the four presidents on Mount Rushmore being Surveyors before they became presidents.

Hannah has won her school a classofyourown® Design, Engineer, Construct! curriculum and a Leica DISTO™ in a package worth £6900. As of the next academic year Shenley Brook End School will be able to take part in COYO workshops giving them the chance to research, design and virtually construct their own Eco-classroom.

Richard Fuller, Lead Teacher of Geography at Shenley Brook End School commented “Participation in the Class of Your Own project has been an enjoyable and worthwhile activity for our students. They have learnt a great deal about planning and explored key themes of sustainability.
