Exciting New Distributors of 3rd Generation Digital Marine Mapping

OceanWise, the marine data management and GIS specialist, is pleased to announce two new on-line distributors for its digital marine mapping products, Marine Themes and Raster Charts – emapsite.com and findmaps.co.uk – in addition to its existing on-line distributor, GeoStore.

OceanWise data products are optimised for use in desktop, portable and web- based geographical information systems (GIS) and tailored to the engineering, environmental and location based services sectors.  Already well in advance of similar products, Marine Themes and Raster Charts also represent exceptional value for money. Now, with the addition of these leading edge on-line distributors, accessing this data has also become a whole lot easier.

Dr Mike Osborne, MD of OceanWise, who has pioneered the use of GIS in the marine and coastal sectors for over 12 years said, “OceanWise is delighted to be working with both emapsite.com and findmaps.co.uk.  These distributors in their own way deliver numerous benefits to users of terrestrial data and I am confident these will be similarly attractive to the marine and maritime sectors”.  The above data products are already available on-line from Astrium’s GeoStore.

Raster Charts

Raster Charts comprises the popular UK Hydrographic Office nautical chart series, supplied as separate image files for easy loading and use in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).  The data is supplied in GeoTIFF format as individual charts for different geographic areas at discrete scale levels.  Raster Charts are available for UK and oversea waters.

Storm Surge Captured

The storm surge affecting the English Channel on the 12-13 December was captured by a tide gauge on the Dart Estuary, Devon.  The gauge is operated by oceanographic equipment manufacturer, Valeport.  The data was telemetered and disseminated by the on-line publishing system, Port-Log.net (see image).  The storm surge increased high waters levels to up to 0.8m and low water levels by a massive 1.8m.  The surge and combined rainfall caused the Environment Agency to issue flood warnings for the area.
