Call for Soapbox Pitches

Sponsored by STAR-APIC.

It’s back! This year’s call for pitches for the GeoCommunity conference Soapbox is open.

So the paper deadline closed in the spring and you’re not a keynote or sponsor speaker but still you’ve got something to say to the GeoCommunity attendees. The good news is that there’s still an opportunity to speak!

A Soapbox pitch is not a conference paper. The format is fixed: you have exactly 15 slides, a fixed 20 seconds per slide, to talk for 5 minutes. The scope is up to you – maybe it’s a product or service pitch, maybe it’s a plea to do geo differently, maybe it’s just an irreverent look at our industry and the interests within it. Last year’s pitches covered the entire gamut. You can deliver a dead straight message, or present something humorous – there’s room for both.

This year again we are looking to fill ten pitches. The event will take place in the Gallery area of the East Midlands Conference Centre at the end of the first day (Wednesday 21 st, 17:40) – and geobingo and free geobeers will again be part of the event to tempt in the audience. The event will again be hosted by Jeremy Morley of the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Geospatial Science.

So, if you want to be heard on the Soapbox this year, please send these three details to Claire Huppertz at the AGI (claire.huppertz@agi.org.uk) by Friday 9 th September:

  • Your name
  • Your affiliation
  • The title of your pitch

The ten pitches will be chosen to give an event which covers a range of topics in the geo-industry in a relatively light-hearted format. Please note that you’ll need to provide your 15 slides by the end of 16 th September so we can integrate all the pitches into one rolling slide-deck.

We look forward to your thoughts!
