The Environmental Special Interest Group (ENVSIG) is an established group of over 400 members within the AGI. This is a very active SIG, organising meetings and visits for its members, keeping members informed through its web pages, and assisting AGI at events, including the annual conference.

The ENVSIG's mission is to facilitate the application of Geographic Information Systems to natural environment issues and related information, through the following objectives :

  • Provision of advice on the potential of GIS in the implementation of existing policies.
  • Liaise with other environmental groups, nationally and internationally.
  • Increase awareness of GIS applications in the natural environment and its relationship with the built environment.
  • Facilitate access to environmental information, both analogue and digital.
  • Act and advise any existing and future environmental agency on the need, content, cost and quality of environmental data.

To help us meet these objectives there is a committee which meets quarterly to discuss and organise future activities of the SIG.

We are always looking for new members and committee members, so if you would like to join the Environmental SIG or are interested in a committee position, then please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Membership Benefits

Convene, connect and collaborate

We provide many networking opportunities for members at our events, seminars and workshops, encouraging debate and forward thinking for the benefit of the whole community.

Promoting the value and benefits of GI

We work hard to ensure that the AGI's voice extends beyond the GI industry, as the considerable pace of technological advancements enables everyone to do more with their data.

Representing the GI community to policy makers

We are continually engaging with the Geospatial Commission's senior leadership team to represent your views and influence policy. We advocate for the investment in skills, shared standards and best practice, as well as better access to data.

Providing a focus for the GI community

The AGI's flagship event, GeoCom, provides a platform for world class speakers to share their vision of where geospatial information professionals can create a step change to deliver economic and societal value.

CPD, training and education

We actively encourage all our members to continue learning by participating in our free CPD scheme and to exchange their geospatial expertise with each other. Corporate members can seek CPD accreditation points for their training courses.
