What a fantastic evening for the second AGI South Coast Network event. Hosted at the University of Southampton, geospatial professionals, educators, and early career talent from across the region were brought together to explore The Great Skills Shift: How geospatial education must evolve for an embedded future.
Our expert speakers delivered thought-provoking perspectives on how our sector’s skill sets are adapting:
- Professor Jadu Dash from the University of Southampton opened the presentations with a look at the education on offer at the University and how it is adapting to shifting industry demands.
- Jamie Heath and Tom Perks from the AGI Early Careers Network gave us sneak peaks into their careers to date and emphasised the importance of learning and professional development during the early stages of a geospatial career.
- Morgan Lloyd, a specialist GIS Recruiter, tackled continuous professional development, highlighting why ongoing adaptation and learning new technical skill sets are essential for long-term career survival in today’s market.
- Richard Marlow from Nash Maritime closed the talks with a compelling maritime data perspective titled “Trust, But Verify: AI, Geo-Data, and the New GIS Skills Gap”, diving into the balance between artificial intelligence, spatial data integrity, and the emerging technical skills required to navigate them (and how to trust them!).
Following the talks, attendees enjoyed an extended networking session with food and drinks, sharing ideas and connecting across the public, private, and academic sectors.
