Building on the momentum of its predecessors, the fifth AGI Greater Manchester networking event, “The Open Data Revolution,” was a resounding success. Hosted by our generous sponsors at The University of Manchester, the afternoon brought together an exceptional blend of commercial business, government bodies, and research establishments.
Ian Dee (Bluesky International, a Woolpert Company) opened the session with “Evolving a National Tree Map – From Canopy Map to Intelligent Inventory.” He explored how the National Tree Map (NTM) has adapted to shifting client requirements and diverse use cases, highlighting how open data actively drives innovation in the commercial sector.
Jade Fawcett & Ralph Hughes (Office for National Statistics) showcased the newly launched Open Geography Portal. Responding directly to user feedback, the ONS has revolutionised its data-sharing infrastructure with this completely custom-built portal.
Professor Richard Kingston at The University of Manchester presented on “AI-Enabled Geospatial Tools & the NERC Digital Solutions Hub (DSH): Driving Discovery, Collaboration and FAIR Environmental Data Use”. Presenting on the platform and how it acts as a gateway to a broad set of inter-connected toolkits that facilitate improved access and better use of the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) many peta-bytes of environmental data.
The collaborative balance between the commercial, public, and academic sectors created a highly effective environment. A diverse range of audience questions sparked vibrant discussions, broadening perspectives as geospatial experts from various fields shared their unique real-world experiences. Following the formal sessions, the vibrant discussions and professional networking continued over a drink.
