Scottish Enterprise, in partnership with the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, ScotlandIS, the Association for Geographic Information, representatives of Scotland’s academic community and the private sector have formed a steering group that seeks to develop a Geospatial Cluster* in Scotland.

It is estimated that the UK geospatial industry will generate over £10 billion of business per annum to the UK economy. The purpose of the workshop programme is to discuss how the sector in Scotland can optimise its share of this market and to discuss how the public sector can help companies to do this.

The workshop will:

• Review the business opportunities arising from access to geospatial data from both public and private sector sources

• Identify potential opportunities and barriers to exploitation

• Identify attractive services for key Scottish sectors

• Identify options to support development of the Scottish Geospatial Cluster.

*A cluster is a geographic concentration of interconnected firms, suppliers, and institutions in a particular field. It has the potential to affect competition by increasing the productivity of the companies in the clusters, driving innovation, and stimulating new businesses in the specific field. Scottish Enterprise are aiming to explore the need for a Network/Cluster Integrator to bring the cluster/community together to identify and explore growth opportunities.
