Welcome to this year's .
Dr. Lauren Biermann
Satellite Remote Sensing (RS) is not in its infancy, however, the UK Government has been cautious in integrating these data into policy and monitoring strategies. To address this, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) formally launched an Earth Observation Centre of Excellence (EOCoE) in October 2015, bringing RS scientists together to drive uptake of satellite data and deliver satellite-enabled solutions. In two years, the centre has delivered a number of key projects that have started to sustainably transform the way Defra operates. My talk will largely focus on three key marine examples, including development of near-shore water quality products using Sentinel-3 data, operational vessel detection and identification using Sentinel-1 radar imagery, and tracking of pelagic fish species in UK waters using a range of remotely-sensed earth observation data. My talk will also cover how improved communication through the EOCoE has allowed for rapid sharing of cross-cutting data, and introduce UK-GEOS, a new cross-departmental government EO service.
