Please note, the Summer School is now cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are working on offering an alternative programme later in the year, which will be announced in due course. Thank you.

The Geocomputation Using Free and Open Source Software course is an immersive 5-day experience opening new horizons in the use of the outstanding power of Linux and the command line approach for processing geospatial data.

We teach beginners and experienced GIS users basic programming concepts that use command-line utilities to process large data sets. Rather than focusing on one programming language or software package, we introduce several tools and languages, and teach how to combine the most useful functions from each. With simple scripts, we demonstrate how to automate essential tasks and modify programmes to solve specific problems, all while achieving optimal performance and dependable results.

It is aimed at researchers, professionals, and students at the masters or doctoral level with an interest in spatio-temporal data analysis and modelling.

Our focus is to provide attendees the tools and competencies to continue developing their skills independently. This heuristic approach allows participants to continue progressing and improving in an ever-evolving technology environment.

We expect participants to have a specific interest in geographical data analyses, and prior experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems will be helpful. Moreover, participants should have a strong desire to learn command-line data processing tools, e.g. R, Grass, Python, GDAL/OGR. However, only basic computer skills are necessary.

Participants need to bring their own laptops with a minimum of 8GB RAM and 30GB free disk space.

The 5-day academic programme is divided into 3 main areas of study:

  • Lectures
  • Tutorials
  • Exercises
