SUMMARY:EEO-AGIS Seminar - Rescheduled
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Caroline Nichol &amp\; Mareike Feldmann\, Mapping Invasiv
e Rhododendron ponticum in Scotland’s Rainforests with Drones and Machin
e Learning\n\nWe have a series of great EEO-AGIS talks lined up. We are ki
cking off with Professor Caroline Nichol and Mareike Feldmann (University
of Edinburgh) who will be doing a double act to talk about their new resea
rch project which is developing new approaches for mapping and managing in
vasive plants in Scotland.\n\nThe talk will be at 5pm in the Edinburgh Cl
imate Change Institute Conference room (High School Yards\, EH1 1LZ)\, fol
lowed by networking and drinks in the Pleasance bar.\n\nFind more informat

.\n\nMapping Invasive Rhododendron ponticum in Scotland’s Rainforests wi
th Drones and Machine Learning  \n\nScotland’s rare Temperate Atlantic
Rainforest hosts one of the world’s richest collections of bryophytes (
non-vascular plants)\, which are under threat from invasive species like R
hododendron ponticum. Effective management of this invasive plant requires
accurate mapping at a regional scale\, which remains a significant challe
nge.\n\nA collaboration between the School of Geosciences and Forestry and
Land Scotland\, this study demonstrates the feasibility of integrating re
mote sensing (UAV-based multispectral and LiDAR data) and machine learning
to produce decision-grade maps for management plans. In the seminar we wi
ll provide insights into our research and discuss how our findings pave th
e way for more efficient monitoring and targeted control of Rhododendron p
onticum in Scotland’s fragile rainforest ecosystems.
