GIS Cloud Launches Platform-Wide AI, Turning the First Online GIS Into an AI-Native Platform

Users can now ask their maps questions in plain language, fill field forms from a photo, and build GIS apps from a sentence, with every AI action confirmed by a human before it is saved

ZAGREB, CroatiaGIS Cloud, the cloud-native geospatial platform serving organizations in more than 60 countries, announced the general availability of GIS Cloud AI, a platform-wide set of AI capabilities that lets anyone work with geospatial data in plain language. The release marks the largest change to the platform since GIS Cloud first brought the GIS Map Editor into the browser, and transforms one of the world’s first online GIS platforms into an AI-native one.

GIS Cloud AI spans the entire geospatial workflow, from capturing data in the field to building the maps, analysis, apps, and reports organizations make decisions with. Rather than a chatbot added to the side of the application, it is a set of capabilities embedded where people already work, all governed by a single rule: the AI proposes, and a human confirms. Nothing is saved until the user approves it.

“For years, too much geospatial work queued behind the handful of specialists who knew the tools,” said Dino Ravnic, CEO and co-founder of GIS Cloud. “GIS Cloud AI changes that without changing who is in charge. Experts still set the standards and have the final say, but the routine work no longer waits for them. Anyone on the team can ask for a map, a query, or a form in their own words, and the specialist reviews and confirms. We founded this company to democratize geospatial technology, and this is the biggest step toward that goal we have ever shipped.”

The release includes:

Ask AI. Users can work with their data in plain language across the Map Editor, Viewer, Contributor, Mobile Data Collection, and Manager: querying features, filtering by attribute, comparing layers, classifying data, and creating maps and layers. Requests can span multiple layers and maps, and a single request can chain steps, such as creating a map, adding a layer, classifying it by status, and linking a form. Users can type or speak in any language, and the AI answers in the language used.

AI Form Builder. Users describe what a project needs to collect, and the AI builds the data collection form, including fields, types, and structure, and suggests fields the user may have missed. Forms that previously took an afternoon to configure now take a sentence.

AI Form Fill. Field crews can point a camera at an asset and the AI drafts the entire inspection form, identifying the object, reading its condition, writing descriptive notes, and mapping details to the correct fields. Every value carries a confidence score, and nothing is stored until the user reviews and saves. The same capability works from voice descriptions and supports bulk updates in the office.

AI App Builder. Users describe the application they need, such as a reporting app, a monitoring dashboard, or a city portal, and the AI generates it, then refines it through conversation. Generated apps can include branded PDF report exports, with no code and no separate publishing step.

MCP Integration. Through the open Model Context Protocol standard, organizations can connect AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT directly to their GIS Cloud data via 55 tools, working with maps, layers, features, queries, forms, and files from inside the assistant. Access is controlled per client, and all write actions are previewed and confirmed before they run.

Early customer response has centered on speed. “The AI selection tools are brilliant. It saved me having to use desktop GIS. For one selection, manually it would have taken an hour, AI did it in less than a minute,” said James England from GIS Solutions Ltd, a long-term GIS Cloud customer.

Trust and data protection are central to the design. GIS Cloud AI is powered by Anthropic’s Claude under strict data-protection terms, and customer data is never used to train any models. For organizations with stricter requirements, alternative models are available on demand, including self-hosted models inside the customer’s own environment, alongside EU data residency and on-premises deployment options. GIS Cloud is ISO 27001 certified. Use of GIS Cloud AI is optional, and read and write access for third-party users on shared data is off by default.

GIS Cloud AI is available today to all users, included in existing subscriptions with fair use applied.
