Cambridge, UK, 16 March 2021. 1Spatial have been awarded a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) innovation contract by Innovate UK funded by High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd. The aim of the competition is to deliver innovation that will drive efficiencies and optimisations for the design and construction phase of High Speed 2.

As a major infrastructure project, HS2 generates vast quantities of geospatial data covering hydrology, geology, utility assets, archaeology, ecology and land ownership details to support the enabling works and main construction phases of the London to Birmingham route. 1Spatial will focus on enforcing data quality within the HS2 supply chain at the point where it crosses between project interfaces.

1Spatial will provide HS2 with a single data quality portal for all contractors, design teams and joint ventures across the entire supply chain. The self-service data quality portal will be accessible to all contractors, providing rapid 100% validation of work package data prior to submission.

The data quality portal will drive a new set of efficiencies by:

  • Reducing the time and cost of manual validation and rework of data
  • Creating consistency in data validation across the supply chain
  • Building confidence in data, due to 100% validation, 100% of the time
  • Enabling faster rollout of data specification changes
  • Measuring, tracking and reporting on supplier performance with dashboard style data quality analytics

Ultimately, this project will improve the digital interfaces of work package data, to ensure data quality is right first time.

Phase 1 of the project will evaluate the feasibility of this proposed data quality portal and will explore the data challenges being faced within the various data interfaces. It will prioritise the data interfaces to focus on and define a proof of concept (POC) containing bespoke data validation business rules, aimed at fixing common data challenges.

Jonathan Shears, Managing Director, UK, 1Spatial commented;

“This is an excellent opportunity to help drive efficiencies right into the heart of HS2’s complex and data rich operational environment and it will allow the strategic value of HS2’s data be better assessed through 1Spatial’s quality analytics.”
