AGI Scotland Update Reflecting on 2024 and Looking ahead to 2025

2024 Highlights

The AGI Scotland Annual Conference 2024 took place in Glasgow on 27th February, attracting over 160 attendees to explore the theme “Maximising the Use of Data and Technology.” Keynotes from Steven Ramage (CEOS) and Charles Kennelly (ESRI) set the stage for discussions on spatial data ethics, while speakers from organizations like Astun Technology, NatureScot, and Shell highlighted innovative approaches to leveraging data for efficiency, wellbeing, and sustainability. The day ended with a well-received panel session on training and skills, chaired by Ashley Stewart of Location Data Scotland, and highlighting work that is being undertaken between AGI, LDS, and the University of Edinburgh on filling the skills gap and ensuring diversity in our profession. The session emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in addressing future workforce challenges within the geospatial sector.

The RSGS Geography Education Workshop emphasized the growing role of GIS and geospatial technologies, positioning geographers at the centre of a £6 billion industry growing at 10% annually. Highlighting the need for home-grown talent and greater diversity, the workshop showcased collaborative efforts to promote spatial thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and alternative routes into the geospatial profession. The workshop showcased collaborative efforts by Location Data Scotland (LDS), the Association for Geographic Information in Scotland (AGI Scotland), and the University of Edinburgh.

The National Collection of Aerial Photography (NCAP) tour took place, showcasing one of the world’s largest aerial imagery archives. Led by Dr Allan Williams and the NCAP Team, the tour highlighted the journey of archival images from remote storage to high-resolution digitisation, emphasizing the collection’s global significance and its accessibility for researchers.

The AGI Scotland CV Review Event took place on 5 June in Edinburgh, providing geospatial professionals with tailored CV advice from industry experts.

Geospatial Insights 2024 in conjunction with the Data Lab, showcased the transformative power of geospatial data through lightning talks, expert insights, and networking opportunities, highlighting innovations and applications across multiple industries. The event, featuring AGI’s keynote speaker Alan Moore, provided a platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the geospatial community.

Seminars and GeoDrinks
The Edinburgh Earth Observatory and supported by the Association for Geographic Information in Scotland (AGI Scotland) (EEO-AGIS) seminar series continued throughout 2024 bringing together speakers from academia, industry, and government to discuss emerging trends, research, and innovation in GIS and Earth Observation. These seminars offer valuable opportunities for learning, professional development, and networking.
