Continual Professional Development

One of your benefits as an AGI member is access to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme to expand your learning and develop your professional skills.

You must be an Individual Professional Member or a Named Member of an AGI Associate or Partner Member to participate in this scheme.

The scheme is free and provides an excellent way of recording your attendance at training courses and conferences, detailing how you have acquired new knowledge and testing your awareness of new technology.

AGI Continuing Professional Development
CPD points can be gained from a wide variety of activities to reflect a broad base of your interests and skills: from participating in workshops or giving a presentation, to authoring GI / GIS reports for your employer. These points can be used towards a number of professional chartership processes e.g. CICES, RICS and Chartered Geographer (CGeog) accreditation. CGeog; an internationally recognised accreditation, allowing you to demonstrate expertise through:

Applying geographical skills, knowledge and understanding

  • Innovating
  • Acting professionally
  • Communicating and influencing

We aim to be as transparent as possible about what we offer points for and why, with detailed information available here:

You must achieve at least 20 external and 15 internal points to be in line with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) guidelines for maintaining Chartered Geographer (CGeog) status.

FAQS

You can start keeping your CPD log immediately. Use the template below to ensure you record all your activities and what you have gained from them. Remember to record key details, such as dates of courses or presentations and URLs of further details.

CPD Return Template
Once you have attained at least 35 points, submit your completed CPD log to info@agi.org.uk in January of each new year.

The AGI CPD Officer will review your return and may ask for further details of specific activities you have recorded to assess your submission. They will also provide you with some feedback to assist you with your ongoing CPD.

When your return has been validated by the AGI, you will receive an official certificate confirming your CPD record for that year, enabling you to easily keep track of your future progress.

You will need to evidence CPD as part of your application for CGeog. The AGI works with the RGS to ensure that our CPD scheme supports your application. Once you are chartered, you will need to continue submitting an annual return. Again, the AGI CPD scheme will assist you with the evidence for your return.

Members also use their participation in the scheme in other ways – for example, as evidence to their professional commitment for internal annual reviews or promotion processes, or even as a reference when applying for new roles.

However, the key reason for taking part in the scheme is to ensure that you are managing your own CPD – to grow in your professional role and track your progress. A structured approach to this, with the benefit of input from experienced GI Professionals, is incredibly valuable.

Partner and Associate Members

If you are a Partner or Associate Member you can validate your training courses and conferences for AGI CPD points.

The AGI CPD Officer reviews the course based on length, not content:

½ day = 2 points

1 day = 4 points

2 days = 8 points

Overnight = 1 point

Costing is £5 per point.

Please complete and return the Accreditation Form to info@agi.org.uk.

AGI Course/Conference Accreditation Form

The CPD Officer will review your submission. If approved, you will be issued a Certificate of Accreditation and an invoice for your CPD points. The AGI CPD logo and number of points will be displayed in your event listing on our website. You will also be able to use our CPD logo in your communications.

Your accreditation must be renewed every 12 months. This is to ensure that any adjustments to course content or programme changes can be made.
