INSPIRE Regulations 2009 - Important News

The Defra UK Location Programme Team have today advised the AGI of the following news and requested its announcement:

'The draft INSPIRE Regulations [SI 2009 No 3157] have been laid in the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. They are subject to parliamentary scrutiny but will come into effect on 31 December 2009. These regulations cover England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Scotland is making its own regulations to come into effect at the same time.

Background information, including a guide to the regulations for England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be published on the Location Programme website http://www.defra.gov.uk/location/inspire/ when these regulations come into effect'.

AGI activity behind the scenes

AGI publishes a lot of announcements about events and activities on the AGI website, but not about everything. Following regular reports to the AGI Council, the AGI Director has been asked by Council to publish a list of some of AGI's recent behind-the-scenes activities - that form part of these reports - as information for members.

LOCATION WALES - Geographic Information for Wales: Opportunities and Challenges

AGI Cymru have issued a white paper entitled 'LOCATION WALES - Geographic Information for Wales: Opportunities and Challenges'.

The paper identifies what needs to be done in Wales to achieve our vision for GI. It is in part about the implementation in Wales of the UK Location Strategy.

The document will be launched formally at the AGI Cymru Conference on 10th December.

Smarter Government: Mapping and Ordnance Survey in the headlines

Prime Minister, Gordon Brown today released a 70 page document, Putting the Frontline First: smarter government, which outlines 3bn of government savings over the next three years. Amongst a range of proposals, geographic information in the form of 'mapping' is mentioned in a several instances and Ordnance Survey specifically.
